OUR STORY

“Dogana” means custom house – historically, our estate was one of many customs posts marking the borders across Italy. Ours sits right on the line between Umbria and Tuscany, where famous travellers such as Hans Christian Andersen, Lord Byron, Goethe and Michelangelo once passed.

In 1938, Lucia’s great-grandmother Maria Casale Sacchi, one of the first female chemists in Italy, used the proceeds from her ammonia synthesis patent to buy La Dogana, falling in love with the lake and its nature.

Today Lucia is the fourth generation to care for the estate, preserving her family’s philosophy while opening the doors of La Dogana to guests from all over the world.

 

FAMILY & AGRICULTURE

ESTATE

 

La Dogana is a family-run historic estate overlooking Lake Trasimeno, surrounded by 4,000 olive trees that produce our organic extra virgin olive oil every year. The property is made up of the main Lake House and two independent houses: the Coach House and the Woodcutter’s House.


The venue is close to the lovely towns of Passignano, Cortona and Tuoro sul Trasimeno. With beaches nearby, boat trips to the islands and direct trains to Florence (1.5 hours) and Rome (2.5–3 hours), there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Within 40 minutes you can also reach Pienza, Siena, Montefalco and Montepulciano.


Today Lucia, together with her team of eight women and Matteo, our gardener, runs the venue, preserving the work of her ancestors and the beauty of its nature. Lucia is the fourth generation to care for the estate.

LA DOGANA

The Lake House is a 19th-century villa divided into eleven apartments, each with a living room, bathroom, kitchenette and one or two bedrooms. There is also an independent house in the ancient woods of the property, the Coach House (our bridal house), which can accommodate up to two guests.

At the top of the hill, among the olive trees, you’ll find our swimming pool (26 m x 5.5 m) with a bathroom, sunbeds, umbrellas, a secret garden and a wonderful view over the lake and its islands.


At the centre of the estate there is our restaurant, reserved exclusively for venue guests. We serve breakfast and dinner for retreats and events, and dinner for our holiday guests.


In the lower part of La Dogana you’ll find a small vegetable garden, Lucia’s beloved corner of paradise, where guests can pick some vegetables, collect fresh eggs, enjoy the flowers and meet our farm animals (a special breed of chickens, geese, rescued horses and bees).

Yoga Retreats

We organise seven-day retreats at our venue that include yoga classes, delicious food, accommodation, town tours and many other activities. All the suppliers involved are local family businesses, and their unique stories are part of the experience.


Our teachers come from all over the world. Lucia will show you beautiful small towns, always with professional tour guides personally selected by her and her team. You will also enjoy special extra activities linked to the authentic Italian culture of the area.


All our food is made with local products, truly “from the farm to the table”. We also offer gluten-free and lactose-free menu options. The yoga studio is located in the ancient mill on the first floor of the restaurant, completely restored and equipped with professional yoga mats, straps, blocks, pillows and blankets.

WEDDINGS

 

Our four-day wedding package with our in-house wedding planner includes everything you need to host your wedding in Italy. We can help you organise every detail of your special day, from the ceremony to the reception, music, bridal make-up and hairstyling, and fantastic international photographers.


La Dogana offers several options for your welcome night, ceremony, aperitivo and wedding dinner, both outdoors and indoors. The venue can host from 40 up to 60 guests in the apartments and up to 60 people for your wedding reception.


We organise romantic symbolic ceremonies in the garden, civil ceremonies in an ancient fortress in Passignano (15 minutes away) overlooking the lake, and Catholic ceremonies in a stunning church in Cortona (20 minutes away).
Many things are included in our bundle, such as the welcome night and the dinner the day after the wedding.

WINE Retreats

We design and organise seven-day wine retreats between Tuscan and Umbrian vineyards to discover their history and production secrets.


Our wine retreats are for wine lovers of all levels and offer a full immersion: each day we visit a different vineyard with the owners and enjoy a private wine tasting.
Our winemakers are all small family-owned wineries, truly special places with special people and stories. Lucia puts great care into selecting the families you will meet, people who not only aim to create extraordinary wines but also have a strong work ethic and respect for their land and the nature around them.


The package also includes professionally guided town tours, a private bedroom, delicious homemade breakfasts and dinners prepared by our chef using local farmers’ products. Transfers from and to Rome Fiumicino airport and all daily tour transfers are included.


On the last day you can select all the wines you loved, mix and match your favourite bottles, and we will ship them to your home. COOKING CLASS & PRIVATE DINNER

 

Our private restaurant with a beautiful view over the lake can be booked for an intimate fresh pasta cooking class followed by a three-course private lunch or dinner.


Elisa will guide you step by step in making fresh pasta from scratch in a relaxed, fun atmosphere, with each guest taking part in the process. Afterwards, you’ll sit down at your reserved table to enjoy your handmade pasta as part of a seasonal menu, paired with our house wine.


The experience lasts about 3–4 hours and is available for private groups of minimum 6 guests. Ideal for families, groups of friends, wedding parties and retreats staying at La Dogana or nearby.

We had such a perfect stay at La Dogana. Our host Lucia was very accommodating and also had so many helpful suggestions and tips about the available activities and places to visit around town. She even recommended a nice little shop for dresses that I loved! The space is so charming and quaint. Our unit had a great view of Trasimeno Lake from one of the rooms. The pool was clean and really beautiful, nestled up in the hill at the end of a short trail. There was a playground and lots of green space for the kids to run around in. Lucia also took us to meet the horses, the ducks and the chickens, which my kids absolutely enjoyed. It was such a great experience all in all that I’m already looking forward to when we can come back!

This being my first time in Italy and especially to it’s countryside, I found my 7 days at Dogana AMAZING. It’s a charming resort that makes you feel like you could live there. The food was delicious and the pool location couldn’t be better as it overlooks Lake Trasimeno.

La Dogana ist eine mit viel Liebe in Ferienwohnungen umgewandelte alte Zollstation am trasimenischen See in Umbrien – direkt an der Grene zur Toskana. Land und Leute sind herzlich, kinderlieb und sehr gastfreundlich – ein perfekter Ort zum Ferien machen inmitten von wunderschönen alten Olivenbäumen und zirpenden Grillen!! Unsere Highlights sind bei jedem Besuch der tolle Panoramapool mit unglaublich schöner Aussicht und – last, but never least – Lucia (und ihr Vater Emanuele), die jedem um sich herum mit ihrer erfrischenden Herzlichkeit und ihrer optimistischen Einstellung ein Lächeln auf die Lippen zaubert!
Für mich, meinen Mann und unsere 3 Söhne ist La Dogana einer unserer absoluten Wohlfühlorte. Wir freuen uns schon auf ein Wiedersehen im Sommer!!!

Abbiamo soggiornato alla Dogana ad Agosto ed è un vero piccolo gioiello. Gli appartamenti sono funzionali e dotati di tutto, immersi nel verde. La struttura offre la piscina, con una meravigliosa vista sul lago Trasimeno e ha diversi spazi in comune, pensati anche per i bambini. Il silenzio del posto è ottimo per chi desidera staccare e regalarsi qualche giorno di riposo, la posizione dell’ agriturismo permette di potersi spostare e visitare comodamente sia Umbria che Toscana.
L’atmosfera alla Dogana è stata subito quella di un ambiente accogliente e familiare, sembrava di essere circondati da amici, sia con Lucia (la proprietaria) che il suo staff sembrava di conoscersi da tempo. La colazione con vista lago, con frutta fresca, dolci ogni giorno, marmellate e anche una selezione di salato, faceva cominciare la giornata con spirito diverso. Non siamo riusciti a provare il Bistrot, attivo nel weekend, ma abbiamo avuto occasione di provare la cucina in una cena organizzata per gli ospiti, ed era ottima. A fare davvero la differenza è sicuramente Lucia: gentile, disponibile, alla mano, traspare subito la passione e l’impegno che mette in quello che fa e soprattutto nel far sentire a proprio agio i clienti. Un’onestà, una trasparenza e simpatia che ho trovato in poche persone, ci siamo trovati benissimo sin da subito con lei.

My behind-the-scenes life at La Dogana

 

We love sharing our everyday life with our guests – from the kitchen to the olive groves and our animals. For us, authenticity means offering you the same care and attention we give to our family and friends. We are a team of eight women running La Dogana: Elisa is our venue manager and Lizzy our tour manager. Together, we aim to make you feel welcomed, loved and part of our home in Italy.
